Token Lifecycle

Modified on Wed, 11 Mar at 5:39 PM

Card tokens go through different lifecycle statuses depending on their provisioning and usage state. Token lifecycle management allows program partners (remote hosts) to control token activation and usage independently from the underlying card.

Token Statuses

INACTIVE

ACTIVE

SUSPENDED

DEACTIVATED
  • Initial state of a token
  • Token is created in the system, but not yet provisioned on the device or merchant app
  • Not usable for transactions
  • Card status remains unaffected
  • Token is fully activated
  • Can be used for transactions
  • Card status remains unaffected
  • Token is temporarily disabled
  • Cannot be used for transactions
  • Token data remains stored on the device/merchant app
  • Can be reactivated at any time
  • Card status is not impacted
  • Token is permanently removed from the device/merchant app
  • Cannot be used or reactivated
  • Card remains unaffected
  • Re-provisioning is required to use token-based payments again

Token Lifecycle Management

The token lifecycle API allows remote hosts to:

  • Activate tokens
  • Resume suspended tokens
  • Suspend active tokens
  • Deactivate tokens
